The inverted pink triangle, the rosa winkel becomes both portal and frame. Three holes puncture its surface: two eye-shaped apertures set at human distance, one V-shaped opening below. Viewers are invited to align their eyes with these openings to see. A triangular mirror mounted on the wall reflects their gaze back, merging the viewer’s face with the sculptural form. The reflection suggests orifices, mammalian softness, insect strangeness, and floral openness. A golden protrusion emerges like a horn from what might become their own forehead.
Inspired by phantom limb phenomena, the work creates a perceptual displacement. The viewer’s vision is channeled through the eyes and orifices of another form, destabilizing the body schema, that internal map of corporeal boundaries. What happens when you see yourself but do not quite identify with the face you inhabit?
Drawing on José Esteban Muñoz’s theorization of queerness as futurity (“Queerness is not yet here. Queerness is an ideality”), Mario Mieli’s writings on “educastration” and the suppression of polymorphous sexuality the work interrogates categorical thinking. Boy, girl, gay, straight, top, bottom, masculine, feminine become inadequate labels for a body that exceeds such frameworks. The geometric abstraction of identity symbols collapses into corporeal ambiguity, into flesh that cannot be neatly coded. Does the viewer observe a queer body, or do they inhabit it? When the gaze collapses inward, what becomes of identity? The work operates as a threshold object where boundaries might dissolve and categories might blur. What does it mean to recognize something that exceeds familiar frameworks of identification? Is this symbol or sensation? Representation or recognition through estrangement?
