Notes On Longing: Decastrating the Eunuch, 2025

Mixed Media Installation: stiffened pillow cases (23.5” x 23.5”) and bed sheet (7.5’ x 5.5’), wax pastel, wood, and steel.

“Baddie I” is part of the  “Notes on Longing”  series of artworks that continue the visual exploration of drawing and paper as spaces for imaginative potential owing it’s conception to the artwork “Impossible Selves”.

These drawings drawn on stiffened bed sheets and pillow cases. Ruminating on the eunuch as a non-binary gendered figure and the practice of castration, physical or otherwise. The eunuch reclaims their desire, reconstructing and reconfiguring their understanding of what it means to be human and to have a desire that cannot be satiated, especially in light of ontologically binary structures. Reclaiming desires deemed taboo times a many in past or present realities, in the form of drawings on torn notes, scraps, and post-it notes. Exploring the medium of drawing as a portal to the unconscious, morphing figures littered across the series. Drawing a parallel between the bedroom and the notebook as both deeply intimate spaces yet utterly utilitarian, the latter being ordinarily ephemeral and the former meant for longer periods of repeated use. This series explores desire and shame around the construction of gender identity in a self-exploratory manner. Exploring the intimacy of a bed as ground for this body of work.
